How to Paint & Gold Leaf Fancy Letters - 2 DAY Workshop - EDMONTON
Konanz & Co. Workshop - July 22-23, 2023
In this 2 day workshop, learn about traditional fancy letters and special effects including block shades, cast shadows, a bit about flourishes, and applying gold leaf to achieve beautiful dimension on your lettering. Learn directly from Jennifer Konanz who brings her 10 years of lettering and sign painting experience, as well as gold leaf training from 2 of the world’s most renowned sign painters and gilders - Noel Weber of Boise, Idaho and David Adrian Smith MBE of Torquay, England. Experience with a brush or having taken the intro Block & Casual class will be useful, but not required. Some painting experience of any kind is highly recommended. MOST MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED!
You will leave this class knowing:
How to construct 3-dimensional effects on letters by hand, including block shades, drop shadows, cast shadows, dimensional blends
Some standard fancy letter styles and how to design your own
How to apply gold leaf with oil size (surface gilding)
Surface gilding effects including bevelled letters, dimensional burnishing, and engine turning
How to add corner elements, borders & scrolling
How to work with both water based and oil based mediums
You will leave this class with:
1 Sign Painter’s Quill (brush) - for waterbased paints
1 Sign Painter’s Quill (brush) - for oil based paints
2 - approx. 8x8” project boards, each with a single letter painted in water based paints and gold leafed
A few sheets of different types of gold leaf for you to take home and practice with
One custom designed Konanz & Co. T-shirt (or trade your shirt in for a hat at the workshop)

You will be required to bring:
Your own half-mask with P100 organic vapour filters for the gold leaf portion
(We will make all attempts to do the oil-based portion outside on the patio, but in case weather doesn’t permit, you will be responsible for having your own safety equipment)
